Response to a Contemporary Exigency Project
When’s the last time that you have been moved to action? This movement could be in the form of a mental
exercise, where you are so inspired by an issue/concern/message that you want to further educate yourself
about it. This could also be in the form of a physical movement. In this case, the message resonates with
you as a physical call to respond by doing. You get up, get involved, show-up and “act” as your personal
response to the call. This movement could even be spiritual, an awakening within your soul that changesyour entire being from the inside out.
It is an understatement to say, “There is A LOT going on in this world today.” There are so many social,
political, economic, cultural, environmental, local/global, health, etc. concerns affecting our world RIGHT
NOW. In the spirit of the NC Wolfpack, we can use rhetoric to think about these issues, as well as aspire to
do something about them, too.
Rhetoric has many definitions (remember our first few days of class?) and some of its functions are to
persuasively convey a message and move an audience to action.
This project is about using rhetoric—those same persuasive skills you put to work in the speech
assignment +more—to identify and research a contemporary issue affecting your life and/or our world
RIGHT NOW, and then compose a persuasive text that moves a general U.S. audience to action. Your
interpretation of action may be broad or narrow as you think appropriate for your topic.
The purpose of the assignment is to use your persuasive text to communicate a message to your audience
to actually do something (e.g., Learn! Educate! Volunteer! Protest! Buy! Recycle! Eat! Pray! Love! Vote! DO

3-4page discussion of your topic that includes the following information:
An introduction to your topic clearly explains your topic and offers your own explanation to why you
believe it is a contemporary exigency—a topic that is of great urgency and importance—that needs to be
responded to (acted on) RIGHT NOW!
Thoughtfully uses a variety of appropriate, relevant, and reliable sources (research) to support your
claims about the significance of this topic

your audience to action in response to your top
