A short essay (roughly one page) on a tax policy topic. You should do a little research and find a federal tax issue where there has been a change proposed by a congressman or other government official. I would prefer it to be related to a business tax issue, e.g., a credit or deduction that businesses use that may be eliminated. or, Tax issues related to the U.S. taxation of domestic companies doing business abroad, or tax issues related to the U.S. taxation of foreign companies doing business in the U.S., are certainly fair game and appropriate.
First step: YOU should be to find a news story from a reputable source related to your issue. This could be a major newspaper such as the Washington Post, NY Times, St. Louis Dispatch, K.C. Star, etc., or it could be from a publication/website that is primarily focused on financial issues such as Bloomberg or the Wall-Street Journal.
Second step: You should describe the tax issue and the reasoning behind it, what is being proposed as a change, and what people on both sides of the issue are saying regarding the possible change. In that regard, you should try to cite more than one source (use a footnote where you include a hyperlink to each source that you use). Then, your last paragraph should state your position on what you think should be done. There will be no right or wrong answer regarding your view, you simply will need to take a position and articulate your reasoning.
**HINT** A more detailed version of the Republican plan for tax reform is scheduled to be released soon. If that happens, this assignment may get easier—there would likely be a flurry of news stories discussing the proposed changes.
