CSTU 301-001, Assignment Directions: Critical Essay
In a “critical essay,” I want you to write a 1000-1200 word response to one of the films that we’ve watched in class at this point in the semester. You can write about any film that’s been assigned. You will articulate a response that demonstrates how some aspect of the film’s art form is working meaningfully in the film. The essay should be organized and clear, with an introduction (including a thesis statement) that organizes the analysis to be supported in the body paragraphs. You may use 1st person and even include a personal response to the film, but root the personal in the critical analysis. Provide concrete examples supporting the assertion about form/theme. These essays are not meant to summarize the film’s plot, nor are they meant to be comprehensive. Rather, it’s an opportunity to write concisely with a narrow focus. What do you find meaningful or significant about the film (choose one specific ‘theme’ or ‘motif’), and how is this particular thematic layer manifest in some specific aspect (or two) of the film’s form (sound, cinematography, mise-en-scene, etc.)? Find your focus and articulate it as an assertion in the thesis.
On what basis will you be graded? First, is it well written (grammar, spelling, clear sentence structure, effective paragraph organization, and transitions)? Second, do you demonstrate growing knowledge of film as art based on reading and class discussion? Third, do you make an argument or evaluation about the film (what it means through how it’s working) that is actually evident in the film.
Note: Critical essays should be typed, double spaced, and follow the MLA style guidelines. Give the review an interesting title (not the assignment title).
