Book: On a Sunbeam (accessed at https://www.onasunbeam.com/) write seven double-spaced pages in which you analyze On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden. You must do a close reading and use at least one (although you’ll likely want more) secondary source(s) for the purpose of supporting your analysis of the primary text. Be sure to consider features of form, analyzing not just the words but also the other elements of whatever form your text takes. Ensure that your essay finds the right balance of being controversial yet focused enough for a paper of this length, and has a “so what” that captures the reader’s interest in your argument. Every claim you make about the text must be supported by evidence from the text (the graphic novel) itself. The writing should push thinking to a degree of complexity. It is extremely important that you represent the text accurately and don’t selectively pick evidence, embrace the counterarguments and debunk them The following is the thesis that you will be proving in the essay (you may modify it): Thesis: On a Sunbeam is a small-scale coming-of-age story about personal relationships that uses its spacefaring setting to explore the development of Mia, a young woman navigating internal conflicts related to interpersonal relationships and genderqueer identity formation. Without introducing formal societal or governmental rules Walden forces the reader to define social rules based on Mia’s choices and actions. In doing so, On a Sunbeam offers readers a multi-sensory approach to understanding how individuals interact with one another to create meaning in their lives. Evidence from the graphic novel that you must find and use in the essay: -Narrow which relationships you want to analyze. -How does Mia develop? What areas of development are you going to focus on? -which internal conflicts do you want to focus on? -where does she grapple with her sexual/gendered identity? -Which choices or actions are you going focus on? Be sure to define anything that may be unclear, unfamiliar, or vague to the reader (ex: “atypical society” or “gender naturalization”) I have selected two sources in the order, this means you can choose up to two secondary sources two support your argument of On a Sunbeam Make sure to use lots of evidence directly from the graphic novel. You can cite your evidence by writing the chapter and then the page from the chapter. When analysing evidence analyse the visuals and the writing.
