Forests provide numerous ecosystem services, including water supply, water purification, and CO2
sequestration. Logging provides timber for building materials, pulp for paper, and many other useful products,
but at the same time can reduce the provision of ecosystem services. One of the best ways to quantify
logging impacts is through paired watershed studies. This is a technique in which an entire small watershed is
harvested experimentally, and compared to a neighboring non-harvested reference watershed. In this lab, you
will create and examine graphs of actual data collected from paired watershed study to assess the impacts of
logging practices on ecosystem services associated with water quality and quantity.
