Give an overview of the concepts presented in the introduction of the lab.
This should include the HR diagram, the reasoning/importance of the classifications, apparent magnitude,
intrinsic brightness, absolute magnitude, etc.
The introduction should explain the basic concepts of the lab, and how they relate to your analysis.
I am not setting a definite length, but it should be comprehensive. Assume I know nothing about astronomy.
I should be able to understand what the concepts are and why they are being utilized.
Do not just list facts. An example would be “A spectral type of O0 has a surface temperature of 60,000k.”
Should be at least a page (500 words).
Results – Chart from Stellarium – 35 points
Create a chart that contains the data for all 40 stars that you are analyzing from Stellarium.
This chart should contain apparent magnitude, distance (lyr), absolute magnitude, spectral type, subgroup,
and numeric class
This chart has to be formatted correctly. Do not just screenshot Excel. It should look like the charts in the
example posted to Blackboard. That includes the caption, with a title.
Results – HR Diagram – 35 points
Create an HR diagram that is organized as the the diagram in the lab manual.
It must be properly labeled and formatted.
It has to be color coded (like HR diagram on Blackboard), and it must contain all the information as shown
in the lab manual. Rule of thumb – if its in the chart in the manual, it should be in yours too.
Do not draw, use Microsoft Paint, or print out a document outside of excel, label it, and take a picture of it.
Discussion – 15 points
Briefly wrap up the lab. Were you able to successfully create an HR diagram?
What type of star is our Sun, and where does it fall on your HR diagram?
Answer the questions in the lab manual
2-3 paragraphs
