IDEAS FOR CONSIDERATION
You may answer one of the following questions OR develop a theme from page 2 or page 3:
Question 1: Theme: Running against yourself
The hardest race is the one you run against yourself. By the end of the novel, the reader learns that some of the characters are able to convince themselves to accept their new lives at any cost. Argue whether or not the characters meet the expectations they have set for themselves and shape their own destiny. You may also focus on one of the characters.
Question 2: Theme: Search for salvation/female and male acceptance
The search for salvation and female acceptance impedes progress for both men and women. Examine how the female and male characters deal with social norms (social order) and whether both men and women are victimized by social pressure and expectations.
Question 3: Theme: Temptation is every individual’s battle and failure
Individuals are not only tempted by war battles and materialism but are also addicted to possession. How does temptation overshadow the characters in the novel?
