The New Deal has been debated by historians over the successes of the program in ending the Great
Depression. Some of the programs of the New Deal have been called contradictory to the long-standing
“hands-off” policy of the government with respect to the economy. This site contains articles by several
historians offering their assessment of the New Deal and in particular the First 100 Days, the Agricultural
Adjustment Act, and the National Industrial Recovery Act. As you read these articles consider if the policies
of the New Deal were instrumental in ending the depression and if these extraordinary measures were
necessary?
