Paper details
Please write an “essay” in response to one of the topics/ideas/etc. (Plato and Matthew in the bible) listed
below, or on a topic of your own choosing. This essay should be approximately five pages long, doublespaced, and in a reasonable font (e.g. Times New Roman 11 or 12 point).
Your paper should/would include:
An interesting title. (You do not need a title page.)
A thesis. Your paper should advance your own point of view about what we’ve read. You are not writing a
synopsis or addressing a general audience – you are putting forward your own reading/interpretation/etc.
While you do not have to explicitly state your own thesis there should be a place where you state what your
paper is for.
You may find it helpful to write in the first-person in order to develop your argument.
A clear and concise introductory paragraph describing what you have chosen to explore, as well as what’s
important about it. (You may certainly use “I” to clarify your thoughts and intentions.)
Structure. Your sentences and paragraphs should build on one another in order to advance your argument.
Thorough and judicious use of quotations.
Page numbers.
A thoughtful conclusion.
