The approach to cybersecurity today is fragmented – everyone is trying to do their best to achieve security.
Failing to have a cohesive strategy to protect critical infrastructure, however, has led to a piecemeal
protection. The Obama administration issued a cybersecurity executive order1 in 2013 which was aimed at
standardizing cybersecurity practices. In 2017, the Trump administration issued an executive order2 which
made the Obama framework federal government policy. While this is not mandatory for businesses outside
the government arena, it can be helpful and begin to solve some of the fragmentation that exists.
According to What is the NIST Cybersecurity Framework? ( https://digitalguardian.com/blog/what-nistcybersecurity-framework ) by Jeff Aldorisio from DigitalGuardian, “Simply put, the NIST Cybersecurity
Framework is a set of best practices, standards, and recommendations that help an organization improve
its cybersecurity measures.” It allows businesses to implement a cohesive cyber strategy. Creating a
framework wherein those who utilize the framework can align their cybersecurity actions with business
requirements, risk tolerances and available resources. Less fragmentation would allow for important
security information to be shared; businesses could assist one another in identifying, protecting, and
recovering from cyber insecurities.
