Guidelines for Service Learning Project (Presentation)
Purpose: to identify a learning need regarding patient (client) assessment among peers and provide an
educational session to reinforce learning to improve assessment knowledge and skills among peers in the
respective area.
Expected Outcome: Nurses will demonstrate improved assessment knowledge and skills in their daily
nursing practice.
Identify a physical assessment area that needs improvement among your peers in the work place (eg.
Neurological, Respiratory, Abdominal, HEENT, etc.). Give rationale for your chosen physical assessment
need.
Develop a PowerPoint presentation based on your identified physical assessment need.
Submit a DRAFT copy of your service learning project (PowerPoint Presentation) to the assigned drop box
on Canvas by 11:59pm on Sunday, February 14, 2021. Feedback will be provided by your instructor by the
end of week 5. This DRAFT presentation will be graded! Lecture notes under respective slides worth 50%.
Conduct your service learning project (SLP) at your workplace, after revising your project based on your
Instructor’s feedback, and then submit the FINAL copy of your service learning project presentation
(PowerPoint) to the assigned drop box on Canvas by Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at 11:59pm. Please
ensure that the last few slides of your presentation have your participant’s evaluation hand written (at least3); a photograph of you providing the presentation (do not include participants face in photographs), and
the name and phone number of one participant who is willing to discuss his/her impression of your work
with the Instructor. Please note this project will not be graded without submission of the required
information underlined.
You should have between 9 and 12 PowerPoint slides in total. Your slides must not be crowded with words.
Short bullet points should be used and enhance most of your slides with relevant pictures (give credit to
source of your pictures). You MUST have lecture notes outlines in the lecture notes box (area) under each
of your content slides and the answer for your evaluation questions in the lecture notes box (area) under
that slide. (Lecture notes are worth 50% and notes must also have a citation, which may be the same as
the one on your slide)
Slide 1 should be your title slide with only your title, your name, and Florida Gateway College.
Slide 2: Title should be Objectives. You should have 3 to 5 objectives with the preamble: By the end of this
presentation, the nurses should be able to: Each objective should begin with a measurable verb (State,
explain, discuss, differentiate, apply, compare/contrast, express an understanding of, express knowledge
of, demonstrate).
You should have 4 to 6 content slides (beginning with an overview of the system slide).
You should have a conclusion slide (take home point).
You should have a slide titled Evaluation with 3-5 questions that are linked to the objectives (this will allow
you to evaluate if the objectives were met. Did you obtain the expected outcome?).
The last slide should be your references (you must have at least 3 of them, which should include your
textbook).
Adherence to APA guidelines is expected. Please refer to your APA manual and other writing resources in
the Assignment Guidelines and Writing Resources module of this course on Canvas for additional APA
resources. Please note that you must have a citation in small font size (15 or 16) at the bottom of any slide
that you have factual or claimed information to cover the content in that slide. At least one citation should
be on all your content slides. Further, you cannot have a citation without a matching reference listed on
your reference slide at the end of your presentation (exception is a personal communication citation), so
when your reference list is complete, please go back through your slides to ensure that you have a
matching citation for each reference on your list (although, some of your slides may have the same
citation). Lastly, ensure that you use hanging indent for the references in your reference list.
Please ensure to apply transitions on all slides and place animation of some of your slides. Also, add
pictures to enhance your slides.
Please stay away from slide backgrounds colors that are harsh (red, black, etc.) on the eyes. Please know
that blue with white font are easiest on eyes.
