REC 3180 – “Mini (at heart) U” Assignment
Due Date: December 4, 2020 at 11:59 PM
Fictional Scenario
The University of Manitoba has a very successful summer program for children and youth: Mini U. It
has been so successful that the U of M is now expanding Mini U to include a program for older adults
(ages 65+). The new program will be called “Mini (at heart) U”.
The vision of Mini U is to provide evidence-based programs (see their website for the complete mission
statement). The U of M has therefore hired a team of consultants to help develop this new program.
You have been hired as a consultant because of your expertise in concepts/theories in social psychology.
Your goal is to help design the new “Mini (at heart) U” program to optimize the leisure experiences of
the participants. You have been asked to submit your recommendations as a “3-point plan”.
Assignment Task
Using the concepts/theories related to social psychology that have been discussed in this course, develop
a “3-point plan” that can help optimize the leisure experiences of the participants in the “Mini (at heart)
U” program.
Your plan should focus on 3 different concepts/theories that have been covered in this course.
Your plan can focus on broad, overarching methods of delivering the program, and/or on very specific
details related to the program.
For each concept/theory, please (a) briefly explain the concept/theory, and (b) describe how the
concept/theory will be applied to the new program.
Tips
Familiarize yourself with the current Mini U program
(http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/kinrec/bsal/miniu/index.html). This will be essential when developing
your plan.
It is in your best interest to keep thinking about this assignment throughout the term. If we cover a
concept that you would like to incorporate into your assignment, this section can be written soon after it
is covered.
A very logical organization is as follows: ½ page for a brief introduction, 2 pages for each
concept/theory (6 pages total), ½ page for a brief conclusion. But you are not obligated to follow this
structure.
Remember to relate all your recommendations to a concept/theory in this course!
Formatting Guidelines
Include a title page with the following information: Full name, student number, course number, and date.
Your written assignment should not exceed 7 pages (excluding the title page), Times New Roman 12-
point font, 2.54 cm (1 inch) margins, double spaced. Any writing beyond the page limit will not be read.
You must use complete sentences (point form is not acceptable).
I will assume that you will use the textbook and course content as references. Any other source that is
used should be cited and included in a separate reference page (using any citation style you want).
How to Submit
Please submit on UM Learn (in the “Assignment” folder). Assignments submitted via hard copy or email
will not be accepted. See the syllabus for the policy on late assignment submissions.
