Group Presentation and Paper: Analysis of an Organization’s Staffing Strategy and
This project is designed to allow your group to analyze a staffing system involving a real
organization, either a current employer of one of the team members, or an organization chosen
by the team, using the staffing concepts we will be discussing throughout the course. The inclass presentations will also illustrate the variety of staffing strategies/systems (or lack of them)
being used by organizations to recruit, hire and retain their workforce and to strengthen their
This project is to be an analysis (not merely a description) of the staffing system. Think of
this project as similar to a consultant’s work for a client, and thus, include conclusions and
recommendations in your report.
Your research must be a field study, collecting data beyond your own interpretation of events:
data from observations, interviews and/or surveys about a particular staffing system (or
specific elements within a larger system).
Your project will comprise two parts: (1) a presentation to the class (50% of the project grade)
and (2) a written executive summary paper (50%). Your group will receive one overall grade,
based on separate evaluations for the presentation and the paper. In addition, you will be
required to evaluate each of your fellow group member’s relative contribution to your project,
similar to a 360-degree performance review, using the assessment tool I will provide. All
members of a group will receive the same grade, unless the peer evaluations reveal necessary
adjustments to an individual’s grade.
Your group will give a 20-minute presentation of your project to the class. Your presentation
should include a summary of actual data you have collected, your analysis, conclusions, and
action plan recommendations. Each group member must participate in this presentation.
Grading criteria for the class presentation include:
➢ organization and creativity
➢ presentation of data/information collected.
➢ analysis of staffing system, including a general overview of organization you are
➢ use of class concepts to support analysis
➢ own conclusions and action plan recommendations
➢ contribution by all group members and use of time
* * * On your presentation date, via Sakai, by 4pm, please provide me with a copy of any
handouts and PowerPoint slides you will be using.* * *
Your group’s written executive summary paper should be a typed, double-spaced,
professionally prepared paper. The written summary is also due by 4pm the day your group’s
presentation is scheduled. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. This executive
summary paper should be no more than 10 pages of content. Please provide data exhibits and
references on additional pages.
Grading criteria for the written executive summary include:
➢ clarity of writing and review of data and information collected
➢ summary analysis of the staffing system (strengths/issues)
➢ conclusions and recommendations
You may find the questions below helpful in preparing your project. Make sure that you
demonstrate your ability to use the assigned readings, our class discussions and learnings from
guest panel discussions, in your analysis.
1. Briefly describe this organization’s staffing strategy/system. What is the
organization trying to accomplish with this choice of system? Was there a vision for
2. Consider the implementation/delivery of the staffing system. Who are champions for/leaders
of the system? Why are they effective (or ineffective) in implementing/executing the system?
What issues were involved?
*3. How successful is the system with respect to its objectives? How do you know? Is the
organization able to institutionalize this system? Why or why not? How does the organization
evaluate the effectiveness of this system?
*4. Overall, what conclusions can you reach as to how well this staffing system/strategy is
succeeding? What recommendations could you make to the organization about how to be more
effective with their staffing strategy and processes? Can you offer any innovative suggestions?
5. What data collection/evaluation method(s) did you select to study the staffing system ? Why
did youconsider it appropriate?
*If you are analyzing a staffing system that has not yet been fully implemented answer
questions 3and 4 by predicting what you anticipate will happen.
An outline (one from each group) is due at the beginning of class on Week 3. The outline
should be 1-2 pages. Briefly describe what staffing strategy and system you are planning to
study, and at what organization? Identify three or four key aspects of the system you plan to
What are your plans for data collection/evaluation/assessment of the system: i.e., observations?
company records? interviews? surveys? This assignment allows me to provide you with early
feedback on your chosen project topic.
