This semester you have learned about the eventful, rich, and turbulent history of African-Americans since after the American Civil War. Major recurring issues during this period have been demands for equality, fair treatment, an end to racial discrimination, and an end to racial violence. The struggle to achieve these demands continues to this day, exemplified by the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States. Using the knowledge that you’ve learned about in this class, please answer the following bolded bullet points:
Explain the meaning and significance of the phrase “Black Lives Matter” in the Black Lives Matter movement.
According to the movement’s website, Black Lives Matter started in 2013. Is Black Lives Matter really a novel movement, or is it a continuation or offshoot of previous movements/views in African-American history since the Civil War?
If you believe that Black Lives Matter is a novel movement, then contrast it to at least one movement/view that you have learned about in this class and explain the differences.
If you believe that Black Lives Matter is a continuation or offshoot of previous movements/views, then provide at least one example of a comparable movement/view and explain why they are connected.
